Lake Chelan has become a popular year-round fishing destination. Anglers consistently take out Cutthroat Trout, Lake Trout, Burbot Cod (Lingcod), Bass, and other game fish. Pike minno is the best bate for jigging or trolling. In the winter of 2001, a fisherman from Tacoma caught a state record 33.65 lb Mack Lake Trout out of the Manson Bay area with one of our local fishing guide services, Allan's Fishing Guide Services. There are also 4 smaller lakes in the Manson area, one of which is well known for ice fishing. Fishing licenses, regulations pamphlets, and supplies are available at Kelly's Ace Hardware Store, 682-2815 (Chelan) or the Village Market, 687-6151 (Manson)

What continues to be smoking hot is trolling very early and very late for Lake Chelan Mackinaw on Mack Bar. Roses Lake continues to have excellent fishing for rainbow trout to two pounds. Rufus Woods is set for nice summer fishing.
On Lake Chelan, fish Mack Bar trolling T-4 Purple Glow flatfish at 1.6 mph. Key depths are in the 120’s Work this area hard from first light to about 7AM. Multiple hook ups continue to be commonplace during the first hour or so of light. Again, our evening trips have been really productive. Particularly that time from when the sun hits Slide Ridge until the light fades has been magic. It is really loaded with fish, including some monsters. Also, Ace Hi Flies behind an Action Disk by Wiggle Fin have really put some nice fish in the boat. What makes it special, are the days that they continue to bite all day long. We have had some monster days in the past few weeks.
Kokanee fishing on Lake Chelan throughout the lower basin should be good. They have been dimpling the surface in huge schools during the morning hours but we have been so busy pounding the lake trout that we have not fished for them during the reporting period.
Troll for rainbows very early and late on Roses Lake. Use one-eighth ounce Roostertails in either green or black. When the fish hit the bottom in the middle of the day, fish rainbow power bait on a slip sinker with 40” of leader to clear the weed tips. Either end of Roses seems to be more productive than the middle.
Rufus Woods Reservoir should be really primed for some great summer fishing.
The kids’ tip of the week is to take time to teach them. From her enthusiasm later in the day I would guess our guide Andy Byrd took a big step towards mentoring a seven year old girl into a lifelong desire to fish. He simply took the time to teach her how to cast an open face spinning reel so she could catch her own fish. It would have been more efficient to cast for her, but you know the saying “help a girl catch a fish and she fishes for a day, teach her how to fish and she fishes for a lifetime”… or something like that. Take that time to teach before the window of opportunity slams shut and you have another inside kid that thinks outdoor endeavors are “icky”.
A big thanks to Heritage House for sending residents, Margaret Kamphaus and Fred Ewing out with us.
The safety tip of the week is to watch out for floating debris as the lake finishes filling.
